Information

This 1933 Duesenberg Model SJ is a Torpedo Sedan built by Rollston and famously known as “Twenty Grand,” a name reflecting its original price of $20,000, a staggering sum in 1932. Designed by Gordon Buehrig as a showpiece for the Chicago Century of Progress Exposition, it debuted at the World’s Fair in 1933 as a supercharged masterpiece. When it didn’t sell immediately, the car was repainted black and displayed again at the second Chicago exposition in 1934.

Eventually, it was purchased by Shreve M. Archer of Minneapolis, a major figure at Archer Daniels Midland and one of Duesenberg’s most loyal customers. The design stood out for its bold styling: a sharply slanted windshield flanked by small triangular panes and a roofline that dipped in a graceful vee between the side windows. Today, this legendary automobile is part of the Nethercutt Collection in Sylmar, California.
