Duesenberg Model J chassis 2481 is a striking recreation of one of the most desirable sporting body styles ever associated with the marque, the elegant LaGrande Sweep Panel Dual Cowl Phaeton. Combining authentic Duesenberg mechanical components with carefully executed restoration work, the car captures the appearance and spirit of the great custom-bodied Model Js of the early 1930s.
The foundation of the car is the original long-wheelbase Duesenberg chassis 2481, which was originally fitted with a Willoughby limousine body that no longer survives. The chassis was later acquired from the Karl Kleve estate auction in Ohio by noted Duesenberg enthusiast George Albright in 2005.
Along with the chassis, Albright assembled an important group of original Duesenberg components, including:
- Engine J‑474
- J‑474 bellhousing
- Authentic, unnumbered Duesenberg firewall
- No. 417 crankshaft
Mounted on the chassis is a recreation of a LaGrande Sweep Panel Dual Cowl Phaeton, one of the most elegant open Duesenbergs ever conceived. The distinctive "sweep panel" treatment visually lowers the car and emphasizes the long flowing lines of the body, creating an appearance that combines sporting character with exceptional refinement.
To properly suit the long-wheelbase chassis, the body was carefully lengthened from short-wheelbase dimensions to the correct long-wheelbase proportions, resulting in a more balanced and imposing automobile. The dual-cowl configuration provides a separate rear passenger compartment windscreen, recalling the great touring cars of the Classic Era while enhancing both comfort and visual drama.
The project was continued by Byard Libbey's Classic Car Restoration Center of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, a firm respected for its expertise with significant Classic Era automobiles.
The restoration was performed with an emphasis on authenticity and preservation, retaining as many original Duesenberg components as possible while producing a car capable of modern touring and enjoyment.
A particularly attractive feature is the dramatic tri-tone paint scheme, combining:

- Silver
- Scarlet
This elegant color combination is complemented by richly tailored red leather upholstery, creating a striking contrast that highlights the sporting nature of the car.
Although no longer wearing its original Willoughby limousine coachwork, chassis 2481 represents a thoughtful and expertly executed tribute to one of the most admired Duesenberg body styles. Combining authentic Duesenberg mechanical components, elegant LaGrande-inspired coachwork, and modern touring capability, it preserves the performance and grandeur that made the Model J the benchmark of American luxury motoring.
