The car was originally purchased by popular actor and comedian Joe E. Brown, one of Hollywood’s biggest stars of the 1930s. The Tourster was reportedly a gift from his wife, making it both a prestigious automobile and a personal family possession. Brown retained the car until 1938, during the height of his film career.

Unlike many Duesenbergs that were carefully preserved from an early age, chassis 2455 entered a far more utilitarian phase during the 1940s. During this period, the car was modified for use as a glider tow vehicle, a highly unusual role for what had once been one of America’s most luxurious automobiles. To facilitate this work, the original coachwork was eventually removed, and the car lost the body with which it had been delivered.

The Duesenberg continued to lead an active life through a succession of owners, including individuals associated with aviation and engineering. Among these was Hughes Aircraft, reflecting the car's connection to California's growing aerospace industry during the postwar years.

Recognizing the historical importance of the chassis, later owners undertook efforts to return the car to a more authentic appearance. In the mid‑1970s, the missing original body was replaced with a carefully constructed replica Tourster body, restoring much of the car's original character and allowing it to once again be appreciated as a classic Duesenberg rather than a working utility vehicle.

Few Duesenbergs experienced a life as varied as chassis 2455. From Hollywood celebrity ownership to aviation support duty, and from workhorse conversion to collector-car restoration, its history reflects the many changing roles these magnificent automobiles played throughout the twentieth century.
