Information

Duesenberg Model J chassis 2432 with engine J-415 is notable for its unusual place in automotive history, representing one of the earliest attempts to modernize a Classic Era automobile through contemporary styling.

Originally delivered with a handsome LaGrande Coupe body, the car spent its early years in conventional Duesenberg form. However, in the late 1940s, it attracted the attention of Jim Roberts, a Ford dealer and former racing driver who was fascinated by the idea of combining Duesenberg engineering with more modern postwar styling.

At a time when most enthusiasts viewed Duesenbergs as outdated luxury cars rather than collectible classics, Roberts undertook one of the first known efforts to fit a modern body to a Duesenberg chassis. His project anticipated a trend that would later become more common, as owners experimented with updating older luxury cars to reflect contemporary tastes.

The modification dramatically altered the appearance of chassis 2432, replacing its original coachwork with a body intended to give the car a more modern look while retaining the legendary performance and engineering of the Model J chassis beneath. Such transformations were unusual at the time and reflected the evolving attitudes toward classic automobiles during the early postwar years.

Fortunately, the significance of the original coachwork was later recognized. The car's original LaGrande Coupe body has since been faithfully recreated, restoring an important chapter in the chassis' history. Today, this recreated body is part of the renowned Jay Leno Collection, ensuring the preservation and appreciation of one of the more distinctive Duesenberg body styles.

The story of Duesenberg 2432 illustrates how perceptions of classic automobiles have changed over time. Once considered a candidate for modernization, it is now appreciated as an important historical artifact. Its journey from original LaGrande coupe to postwar custom and ultimately to the recreation of its original form makes it one of the more fascinating examples in the history of the Duesenberg Model J.
