Information

This Duesenberg was originally completed with Murphy Convertible Sedan coachwork, built in Pasadena, California, by the most prolific and stylistically influential of all Duesenberg body builders. When new, the car was sent to New York to serve as a demonstrator, showcasing the elegance and engineering prowess of the Model J to potential East Coast buyers.

It later returned to Los Angeles, where it found an exceptional new owner: Cedric Gibbons, the celebrated MGM art director and set designer. Gibbons was one of the most visually influential figures of Hollywood’s Golden Age, credited with defining the sleek, glamorous look of early MGM productions. He was married to the equally iconic film star Dolores del Río, and together the couple enjoyed this Duesenberg for many years. Their ownership helped secure the car’s long association with California and with Hollywood’s elite.

The car remained in the state for much of its life, eventually receiving a full restoration in 1987. Following the restoration, it achieved one of the highest honors in the collector‑car world: a Best in Class award at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, underscoring both the quality of its restoration and the inherent beauty of the Murphy design.
