Information

This 1929 Duesenberg Model J Sports Sedan was one of only two cars built by Murphy with a distinctive V-shaped windshield. Its first owner was Doris Duke, the billionaire tobacco heiress and philanthropist. Duke lived a life of contrasts, immense wealth mixed with personal struggles, and often found herself in the headlines despite preferring privacy.

Her interests were wide-ranging. She briefly worked as a news correspondent in the 1940s, played jazz piano, and even learned competitive surfing under the guidance of Duke Kahanamoku. At her New Jersey estate, she created one of the largest indoor botanical gardens in the country. She also played a major role in preserving more than 80 historic buildings in Newport, Rhode Island.

Twice divorced, Duke led a colorful personal life but remained deeply committed to philanthropy, supporting AIDS research, medical causes, and child welfare well into her later years. When she passed away, most of her estimated $1.3 billion fortune went to charity. Today, her legacy continues through the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, which funds medical research, the arts, wildlife conservation, and the protection of children and animals.
