Information

Chassis 2127 was originally delivered with a seven‑passenger Holbrook limousine body, one of the formal, dignified designs Holbrook produced for the early Model J chassis. The car made its public debut at the New York Auto Show in December 1928, one of the first Model Js presented to the public during Duesenberg’s dramatic introduction of the new model.

When new, 2127 was sold to William C. Van Horne, who later became the senior Duesenberg distributor for Canada. Van Horne soon passed the limousine to William Christie, and in 1931 the car entered the long ownership of Arnold Burke, who kept it until 1957. Burke returned the car to the factory in 1935, where it received a major update: the original Holbrook limousine body was removed, and in its place the car was fitted with a LeBaron convertible sedan body, a far sportier and more fashionable configuration in the mid‑1930s. This transformation was not uncommon at a time when many owners modernized their Model Js to keep pace with styling trends.
After Burke’s long custodianship, 2127 passed through a notable chain of enthusiasts who preserved the car through the second half of the 20th century.

In 2008, chassis 2127 was sold through RM Auctions for $1,210,000, reflecting both its rarity and its well‑documented history.

Today, it is widely believed, though not officially confirmed, that the car resides in Moscow, housed within a private automobile museum. The exact date of its arrival in Russia is unclear, but several collectors and historians have noted its presence there in recent years.

Regarding the Early Photographs
A group of four identical period photographs shows a Model J posed near a hangar and aircraft. These images have sometimes been associated with chassis 2127. However, there is no firm documentation confirming that the car in those photographs is indeed 2127. Since several early Model Js carried similar Holbrook limousine bodies, the identification remains uncertain.
Until factory records, original captions, or provenance-linked prints emerge, these photos must be considered attributed but unconfirmed.
